Spitalfields Life Books is launching a tribute to British design and print techniques, with words by The Gentle Author, on 15 October 2015.

Designer and typographer David Pearson leads a stellar cast of contributors for the latest book by the Gentle Author, which chronicles the fascinating story of six generations of the specialist printers, Baddeley Brothers.
Contributions from three of the UK’s leading artists and designers are juxtaposed with centuries-old designs from Baddeley Brothers’ archives. Pearson has created six striking illustrations, showcased as tipped-in pages, using a range of bravura print techniques printed by Baddeley Brothers.
Illustrative artist Lucinda Rogers visited the company’s Hackney workshop to draw the craftsmen at work and her images embellish an illuminating interview with Charles and Chris Pertwee, direct relations of the original Baddeleys and the current Directors. British artist Adam Dant, best known for his images of the 2015 General Election, has fashioned a map of central London, featuring Baddeley Brothers’ sites and premises over the centuries.
A testament to Britain’s rich design heritage, this exquisitely produced, clothbound hardback is a narrative of the evolving city and society in which the Baddeley Brothers lived and worked. The book also features the anatomy of an envelope and illustrations of differing styles, helping readers recognise their Tuck and Slit from their Topless Thumb Pocket.
A magnificent glossary adorns the final few pages, including gems such as Bastard Title, Dandy Roll, Dead Horse, Mackle, Slug, Rat-House and Squabble.
The foreword is written by the Baddeley Brothers’ Directors:
Director Charles Pertwee commented: “We’re very proud of our history and I’m delighted that three of Britain’s top artists have dedicated their time and their talent to illustrating our book. The Gentle Author shares our passion for this part of London, and we’re honoured to have been part of its changing society. Our work is all about creating the perfect ‘feel’, and we wanted this book to be interesting, useful, tactile and glorious – ideal for lovers of design and typography.”
The clothbound hardback will launch at the St Bride Foundation on 15 October. Invitations and interviews with the collaborative team are available on request. The book will be available for £35.00 from BaddeleyBrothers.com and bookstores.
